TD Talk - Episode 4

Reporting Abuse at Horse Shows:

Taken from an AP article on The Horse.com
The FEI Tribunal has released its decision in the case of alleged horse abuse committed by Amy Tryon while participating in the cross-country phase of the 2007 Rolex Lexington Kentucky 4-Star Event, held April 28. Tryon's mount, Le Samurai, was injured during the event and was subsequently euthanatized.

The case involved the riding of an apparently lame horse in the final moments of the course, as well as the state of the horse when the last fence was jumped. A hearing was held June 25.

The dilemma which the Tribunal had to resolve was a very difficult one. The main issues to be decided were whether the competitor committed an "abuse" as this term is defined under the applicable rules (see below) and, if an abuse was committed, whether it was an intentional act or an unfortunate omission to take action and stop the horse, as signals of discomfort were not correctly perceived by the competitor.

The Tribunal came to the conclusion that the competitor's behavior at the end of the cross-country phase of the event constitutes abuse according to the applicable FEI regulation. The competitor continued to ride after the horse was objectively lame and injured. Conversely, the competitor omitted to act, by failing to pull up the horse when she could have. This caused, or was likely to cause, pain or discomfort to the horse.

The Tribunal expressed its opinion that "abuse of horses constitutes an offence that violates the most fundamental rules of the equestrian sport and is, as such, highly reprehensible from a moral point of view." The Tribunal determined that, had "the competitor intended to ride a lame or injured horse, a suspension for life would not have been an inappropriate or a too severe penalty."

The Tribunal's decision indicates, there was a "significant disconnect between what Tryon felt and what was actually occurring." While Tryon was negligent in not stopping the horse, the Tribunal determined that she did not understand that the horse had been injured until just as she pulled him up.

I printed this article NOT to discuss lameness in particular but discuss cases of abuse as they are experienced or seen at horse shows. As a competitor, if you feel that you are witnessing cases of abuse, it is your responsibility to report what you have seen to the Technical Delegate as well as Competition Management. DO NOT approach the offender on your own, you have no clout and will only make the situation more unpleasant. TD's are trained for situations such as this as well as in conflict management.

Steps you SHOULD take:
1. Note the competitor's number
2. Approach the TD and state you are "uncomfortable with a situation taking place in the ______(warm-up arena, parking lot, barn etc.) with competitor number _______."
3. Tell the TD whether or not you would like this to be an anonymous notation or whether you are comfortable being called as a witness.
4. Return to your stall/trailer and jot a few notes. Write down what you saw, the location and any other details that may be important for you to remember further down the road.
5. Go about your business and let the TD and show management follow up on your complaint.

The show manager is the only one who has the power to eliminate a competitor (outside of the ring) and/or file a complaint/warning card. You cannot do any of the above things, but you can be vigilant and serve as an educated, well-informed witness should you be called to duty.

One of the main goals of the USEF is to provide a fair playing field for all competitors and unfortunately people bend the rules and jeopardize attaining that goal. Because our beloved equine partners cannot speak, it is up to us to be their voices. When we sign our entry forms, we sign on to be an advocate for the horse.

Lancaster County Fair 2007

The Lancaster County Events Center was the host to this years Lancaster County Fair Open Dressage show. The weather was hot and humid, but never seemed to dampen the spirits of the riders.

The show started at 7:50 am with Intro Classes, and ended around 6pm with First Level. There was an adorable Pas Des Deux over lunch, performed by Kristin Feese and Rebecca Dilley of LEC. It was not to be missed, hopefully there will be another opportunity to showcase their routine this year.

Dr. Jane Linville of Kansas was the judge for the day. She endeared herself to riders with kind comments. I personally didn't hear any griping about the judge, which is always a good sign. To my eye, all the competitors seemed to be having a good time, and were riding well.

According to management the show was completely filled. I don't have the actual numbers but it appeared to be between 30-40 riders. The show was well organized, and did not appear to suffer from the usual plague of show delays we've all become accustomed to. Kudos to Kristin Feese and Jane Shanahan for their hard work putting the whole thing together.

On a personal note: Dobby and I scored 70% on both of our First Level tests, and earned the rank of "Reserve Champion." The Honor of First Level Adult Amateur Champion was bestowed upon Karen Stricklett and her Mare Audacious. Congrats to everyone who competed! I was lovely to see all of you!

Official Results of the show will be posted on the NDA Website.

Sour Puss

We are so lucky this season to have Donna Kilday taking photos of horse shows around the area. She is a talented photographer that's for sure. Her love of horses is evident if you've ever seen her work.

Donna was present this past weekend at the Lancaster County Open Dressage show, and once again she snagged some awesome pictures of Dobby and I. Well,I should say of Dobby, and my legs. I need to work on my faces.

I look through the photos and see Karen Stricklett beaming a smile. Kristin Feese, looking determined but calm, and then there is me, sweating and looking as if I've just swallowed a grasshopper.

LOOOVELY!

Non-horse people tell me I look angry when I ride, and this couldn't be farther from the case. I've found such incredible joy in the show ring this year, I just don't show it. I should start.

So after 2 shows and 2 separate rounds of odd Margo-faces I'm going to start practicing my serene look when I ride. Closed mouth, eyes up, and a partial smile. Can't be any more difficult than keeping my shoulders square or elbows bent right?

Boy I tell you, if its not one thing its another eh.

The Equine Gourmet

I bought Dobby some new treats from Smartpak. I ordered him some Hoofsnax, a cookie that is enriched with biotin. I thought this was a brilliant idea, Dobby LOVES cookies so we may as well use reward time as a booster to our hooves.

I got my cookies in the mail the other day, they looked good! I opened the bag, and man, they smelled good! Like cinnamon cookies, I had a hard time not eating one or two of them myself. I was sure Dobby was going to be gobbling these suckers up left and right. Hoofsnax, the new peppermint.

So last night I greeted Dob in his stall with these new cookies, and like the pig he is, he ate them down, but afterwards he made a face, and started licking his stall door. We went on to have a nice little ride together, afterwards when I went to reward his efforts with more cookies I was met with closed lips.

He didn't want them, doesn't like them and there is no way possible to get this food snob horse of mine to eat his healthy Hoofsnax. I even tried to shove them into the side of the mouth, using the human logic that if he just gave them another little taste he'd come around.

Nope, in the side of the mouth, jaw opens to drop cookies on the floor. Apparently, Dobby has gotten spoiled from all the homemade cookies he's been eating. We get those from our Grand-momma-Amma (Jamee's mom), and they are apparently the best.

Luckily, Dob's neighbor Reggae likes the cookies, so I'll just give them to his mom!

Horseman helping Horseman

Traveling with horses is challenging, but imagine that you are traveling with your horses in an unfamiliar area when your vehicle breaks down or, worse, you are involved in an accident requiring overnight repairs and temporary shelter for your horses. Who would you call for assistance?

As a member of USRider, you could count on prompt, efficient help with a single phone call. USRider, the nationwide roadside assistance program for equestrians, provides emergency road service to its members in the lower 48 states as well as the 10 provinces of Canada and Alaska.

In addition to other unique benefits for the traveling equestrian, USRider provides emergency stabling referrals for its members. To enhance this service, USRider is seeking to expand its existing database of emergency stabling facilities available for use by its members. The call is being put out to fellow equestrians in the United States and Canada to assist in this effort.
If you would be willing to provide fellow equestrians with emergency stabling on a case-by-case basis, sign up by visiting the USRider Web site or writing to USRider Equestrian Motor Plan, P.O. Box 54711, Lexington, KY 40555. When writing, provide directions to your stable.

As part of the USRider motor plan, if a USRider member is involved in a reportable accident, USRider reimburses the member for emergency stabling and lodging (certain restrictions apply). To learn more about the USRider Equestrian Motor Plan or to request a free brochure, call toll-free (800) 844-1409 or visit http://www.usrider.org/.

Simplify your life

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), announced today that effective June 28th United States Dressage Federation members, who have an active USDF participating membership and are USEF members, can now obtain one joint USEF/USDF membership card as opposed to two separate cards.

The card can be accessed online and carries both of the individual membership numbers. The USEF already has a joint membership card with the United States Hunter and Jumper Association (USHJA) and now anyone who is a member of all three organizations, USEF, USDF and USHJA can also obtain a card with all three membership numbers on it by accessing it online through the USEF. (Or, if they are a USEF member and also a member of just one of the other organizations they can obtain a card with both numbers.) The USDF will provide the joint cards for USDF and USEF members only.

The new card is part of a joint USDF and USEF effort to streamline the paperwork required for exhibitor show entry and compliments the online USEF/USDF Master Verification capability made available in October 2006.

To print the joint card through the USDF go online here . There are two ways for current members to print joint cards online through USEF. To print it through the search function go to the USEF website, on the left hand side of the homepage go to “Searches” and select “Memberships” from the drop-down menu. Fill in either your membership ID number or your first and last name. When the file with your membership information appears, simply select “Print Card.” You can also access it through your Authorized User Account by clicking on “Sign-In” in the lower right hand corner of the homepage. Fill in your Authorized User Account information. When the window opens look for “Membership Options” below that click on “2007 Proof of Membership Card Reprint.” Your card will appear and simply click on “click here to print.”

This is one less card you have to copy and carry around :)
